LUMBER BRIDGE — The American Red Cross is assisting a 37-year-old Lumber Bridge woman whose home was damaged in a fire on Thursday that authorities believe was arson.

Latisha Davis, of 141 Birdsway Road, was not at home when the bedroom of her mobile home caught on fire just after noon, according to sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth, an arson investigator. Duckworth said that a neighbor saw smoke coming from the home and reported the fire, and volunteer firefighters from Parkton and Lumber Bridge extinguished the blaze.

Duckworth said the fire started in the master bedroom, which showed the most damage, but that the house cannot be lived in because of soot from the smoke.

Duckworth said there were no signs of forced entry and it’s “very clear and obvious” that the fire was intentionally set. He said the fire caused “at least a couple thousand dollars damage.”

Duckworth said that Davis didn’t have any insurance.

The American Red Cross providing Davis clothing, food and a temporary place to live, according to Carol Ann Lentz, executive director for the Scotland County chapter of the American Red Cross.

“We’ll continue to work with them to see if there are any other resources we can help them with,” Lentz said. “We will continue to assist the family to return to a normal way of life.”
