LUMBERTON —Two fair-share givers came one step closer to winning a new car at the United Way Car Giveaway at Terry Chapin Nissan on Tuesday.

The first name drawn was David Carroll, an employee for the city of Lumberton. The second finalist drawn was Deborah Council, a BB&T employee.

This is Carroll’s third year donating to the United Way. He said he does so because he enjoys giving back to his community.

Council, a fair-share contributor for about 15 years, said she donates in order to support Lumberton Hospice.

Both Carroll and Council said if they win the car, they plan to keep and drive it.

Sandra Oliver, executive director of the United Way of Robeson County, ensured the 880 entries were mixed well in the cylinder before Terry Chapin, owner of the dealership, drew the names.

Carroll and Council qualified for the drawing as fair-share givers — meaning they contribute at least the equivalent of one hour’s pay a month to United Way. They became the 12th and 13th finalists among 20 who will participate in a reverse raffle in December at Biggs Park Mall. The last person standing will pick an envelope that will reveal which car they will drive away in — a Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.

Drawings are held on Tuesdays and rotate at the participating dealerships — Lumberton Chevrolet, Lumberton Honda, Terry Chapin Nissan, Peterson Toyota and Fair Bluff Ford. The next drawing will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Lumberton Honda.
