RALEIGH — Three region players, two coming from Richmond County, were selected as part of the 2012 Associated Press All-State Football Team on Monday as voted on by 17 statewide media members.

There were no unanimous selections but Raleigh Wakefield’s Jordan Fieulleteau did receive a team-high 16 votes at wide receiver after a 24-touchdown senior campaign. State champion Matthews Butler led the way for a single program with four selections, all Division I commits — WR Uriah LeMay (Georgia), LB Peter Kalambayi (Stanford), LB Sean Wiggins (Ball State) and DB Channing Stribling (Michigan.

Richmond defensive standout Devant’e Covington and all-Southeastern Conference offensive lineman Tyrone Crowder represented the southeastern portion of the state along with South View’s Greg Gilmore, an LSU commit. Robeson County had three players listed on the all-state ballot — Blake Greene, Zach Leach and Shawn Williams — but none garnered enough votes at their respective positions to make the team.

At quarterback, Greene and Wakefield’s Connor Mitch were beat out by Will Grier, a sensation at Davidson Day who led the nation in completion percentage, yards (5,785) and touchdown passes (69). Williams was one of 14 finalists at running back to rush for more than 2,000 yards this season.

Northern Guilford’s T.J. Logan and Charlotte Catholic’s Elijah Hood were both majority selections in the backfield and are both nominated for the state’s player of the year honor along with Greene, Mitch, Kalambayi and South Caldwell’s Zac Pollard.

Former Lumberton quarterback Marquez North, the state’s most recruited prospect at Charlotte heavyweight Mallard Creek, made the team with nine votes at wide receiver.

The state’s top coach and player of the year will be announced this week.
