RED SPRINGS — A 14-year-old is among two teenagers charged with setting fire to a mobile home in Red Springs that was occupied by four people.

Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth said no one was injured in the fire that was set by Clayton Elijah Cummings, 17, of Lovette Road, and the juvenile, who are each charged with first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit arson. The 14-year-old’s name was not released because of his age, but Duckworth said he and Cummings are related.

The fire happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 4 at a mobile home on the 200 block Childrens Road in Red Springs after the 14-year-old and a 15-year-old who lived at the home argued, Duckworth said. The two families had an ongoing dispute, according to Duckworth.

Duckworth said the 14-year-old and Cummings went to a local store and bought some gasoline and then set the home on fire. Melissa Manor, Ollyn Sanderson Jones, Tyson Maynor and the 15-year-old escaped the home without injury, according to Duckworth.

Damage to the mobile home was estimated at $4,000.

Cummings, who was also charged with first-degree trespassing, is being held at the Robeson County jail on $16,000 bond.

The 14-year-old was released to a family member.

THE DUCK is the BEST, HARDEST WORKING, MOST DEDICATED arson investigator Robeson County EVER had. No matter HOW he does it, THE DUCK gets it done.

Lock up the parent(s) or gaurdian, or whoever is so-called raising the 14 year old.. Hold somebody responsible, this is why they do what they do.. Better yet, don't lock up the dad, let him and his son walk thru town.

Public whippings need to return. Beat em with a leather belt on the court house lawn, the dad, the mom, the grandma and whoever else raised the kid.

What? I wonder if you realize that the things you say do not make any sense.

Ross, i agree with your comments 99% of the time, but this one i dont agree with. All involved should held acountable for their actions. Their own actions.

whataworld: Let me 'splain my good "friend", lord knows I need all I can get.... But, the 14 year old was "released to a family member"... That is what angers me, why was he released just because of his age? He had enough sense to go get gas and scratch a match which could have killed someone, but because he's 14 he gets to go home? And of course when he gets to trial he'll get a slap on the wrist.

His "family member" is responsible for his actions 24/7, or should be until he's grown. This is why the "family member" should have to sit in jail or be punished for not knowing where the kid was at ALL times. As parents we MUST know what, when, and where our kids are 24 hours a day. We know where our cell phones are at all times, we know where our wallet is at all times, why not our kids? I know it's hard, but so is being a responsible parent. I hope you are still my friend, Ross.

Hey Ross

You are my friend, and you are right. Whoever is legally responsible for ANY punk should get the same sentence as the punk.

But in these days of fatherless homes, and moms gone wild, what can you expect. I am sure ill receive a bunch of comments now from all the single mons out there, but the truth is the truth. There is no more "being held responsible " for actions. That's why we are in the shape we are.
