ROWLAND — With the score knotted at 68-68 with 1:23 left, the South Robeson girls basketball team went on a 5-1 run the rest of the way to squeeze out a 73-69 home win over Fairmont in a Three Rivers Conference opener Friday night at South Robeson High.
A’terria Quick and Savanna Hunt combined for 43 points to lead the Lady Mustangs. Quick, who had 22, went on a 5-0 run of her own in the fourth that gave the Mustangs a 64-63 edge.
Fairmont’s Anasia Evans finished with a game-high 28 points. Evans’ scoring outburst was highlighted by her nine unanswered points in the fourth that gave Fairmont a 61-57 lead.
Na’Jewel Ingram followed with 23 for the Lady Golden Tornadoes (7-7, 0-1).
Jacquel Stackhouse chipped in 14 for South Robeson (6-5, 1-0).
Fairmont boys breeze by ‘Stangs
Kwinton Hinson scored a game-high 18 points to pace Fairmont to a 65-48 Three Rivers win over South Robeson.
Fairmont took a commanding 35-21 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Shemar Barfield netted 15 and Luke Hunt posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Tornadoes (11-3, 1-0).
Shaunquel Thompson led winless South Robeson (0-11, 0-1) with 14.
Swett tops Scotland
Mitchell Hill’s 20-point, 11-rebound double-double anchored the Purnell Swett boys basketball team to a 67-52 win at Scotland in Southeastern Conference-opening action Friday night.
The win snaps Swett’s four-game losing streak, as the Rams improve to 3-10 on the season.
Swett’s James Chavis added 15 points and Chris McManus chipped in 14 for the Rams.
Tra’Shawn Gregory led Scotland (0-10, 0-1) with 13 points.
On the girls’ side, Purnell Swett was routed by the Lady Scots, 78-22.
Scotland (9-2, 1-0) had three players in double figures, led by Tykeria Johnson with 18.
Colleen Chavis had a team-high 10 points for the Lady Rams (1-11, 0-1).
Lumberton falls to Pinecrest
SOUTHERN PINES — The Lumberton boys basketball team came out flat and never recovered in a 62-47 SEC loss to Pinecrest.
The Pirates (5-9, 0-1), who managed just four points in the first quarter, couldn’t keep up with the Patriots’ scoring, led by Justin Ray who had a game-high 21 points for Pinecrest (10-3, 1-0).
Montrae Strother led Lumberton with 15 points, followed by Demetri Sheridan with 13.
