Luther Moore

PROSPECT — Luther Harbert Moore, 86, of the Prospect Community was the first born of 11 children to the late Luther W. and Nora S. Moore on June 9, 1926. He departed this life to continue service to his Lord on Jan. 17, 2013, at his home.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Prospect United Methodist Church, 3929 Missouri Road in Maxton, the Revs. Kenneth Locklear, Dr. Robert Magnum and Bill James Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in Moore family cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Sarah “Doll” Hunt; a brother, Earl Moore; and a daughter, Ethel Oxendine.

Moore leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Rosie Mae Moore of the home; a daughter, Barbara Melvin of Red Springs; four sons, Harvard Anthony “Jed” Moore of the home, Luther Bryan “Shorty” Moore and wife Johanna of Prospect, James Steven Moore and wife Susan of Prospect, and Harbert Edwin “Eddie” Moore and wife Tyra of Wakulla; his sisters, Mary Francis Baker, Mable Cummings, Cleo Locklear and Jane Sampson; his brothers, Charles Bill Moore, Carl Thomas Moore, Clement Richard Moore and Claude Moore; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; special family members, Richard Moore, Carl “Pea Rooney” Locklear and Larry Bullard; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who all loved him dearly.

Moore was a dedicated member of Prospect United Methodist Church; owner and operator of Moore’s Chainsaw Service in Prospect; and a retired member of Prospect Volunteer Fire Department.

The visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Prospect United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, we the family are certain our father would prefer any gifts or donations be directed to Alzheimer’s research to combat the disease that has afflicted our beloved mother.
