LUMBERTON — A 20-year-old Lumberton man who has a long history of being charged with violent crimes has been arrested for first-degree murder in a shooting death that occurred on Sunday.

Shilec Rothwell, of 3587 Dallas Road, was charged Tuesday with the murder of 61-year-old Willie Manning, of 135 Stealth Drive, Maxton, according to Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.

Rothwell, whose four-page criminal record dates back to 2008, was also charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious bodily injury, felonious breaking and entering, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Manning died from multiple gunshot wounds Sunday night, according to sheriff’s Capt. Anthony Thompson. A second person, Daniel McLaughlin, 54, of the same address, underwent emergency surgery after suffering gunshot wounds and is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Sealey said McLaughlin answered the door to find Rothwell, who was asking for gasoline. The sheriff said McLaughlin was in the kitchen looking for a container to hold the gasoline when Rothwell broke into the home and shots were fired.

James Obershea, a homicide detective, made the arrest. Sealey said the investigation is continuing, and lawmen are looking for two more people whom they believe were with Rothwell.

Rothwell’s criminal history includes pending charges for armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and assault inflicting serious injury, but he was free on bail. His bonds for during 2012 totaled $125,500.

The cross on the forehead just threw me off. Why would u represent something that your not. I am scared of just lookin at him. I am not being judgmental. It is what it is, no exceptions. You wanna be known for a street thug, then take the corporal punishment too.

first off let me start by saying not one of you is god so you can not judge this man or even remotely comment anything bad about him..god will get him for his sins but you have no idea who he is as a person..this man is like my brother and no he does not make the best decisions but ive never met someone that loves as hard as he does..his parents are not the blame..robeson county is..there are more people that commit crimes in robeson county then most..teachers cant even make a comment because most of yall could care less anyways..i got love for shelic and he is not a bad person..there are many things he is but a murderer is not one of them

first off i want to say that you cant blame "every" parent for the downfalls of their children...now with that being said, i totally agree with "Brandine", i know this family and for most of this boys life, he would do things and people would try to come to the parents and it was like, you didnt know who the parent was in the situation...the parents would want to physically harm you, and make excuses for him...as he got older it seemed as if he was just hanging with his "homies" when he was around his parents...the things that he would do, they knew that he was doing it, and yet they still covered, and helped him get out of things...now this is the end result of trying to be your childs "homie" instead of their parent...when most kids act a fool, most of the time (not all of the time), the apple dont fall too far from the tree...PRIME EXAMPLE!!!! and for people wanting to defend him and blame society, i say to you all, if the knock would have come to your house, or your family members house, would you still defend this criminal, and give him another chance to knock on someone else's door?? im personally sick of people wanting to blame society for everything that goes wrong in their lives or the lives of inner city kids...everybody always wanting to blame music, television, movies, actors, ect...in the music nobody lives those kinds of lives, on television its all scripted (get it, its written for your entertainment), in the movies again its written, and actors/actress are not responsible to raise your kids...if you think its something your kid should not be watching or doing YOU ARE THE PARENT, PARENT THEM!!! and i truly hope the system doesnt slap this family in the face by giving this criminal, another slap on the risk, or a suspended sentence..clearly thats not working just look at his record...im done!!!

His criminal history speaks for itself. Several armed robberies and family bails him out over and over again. If he had stayed in jail, lives would have been spared, including his own. Robbing people when you don't have too. Why not ask those who spent all that money getting you out to give you money? Why not stop getting tats and save that 8000. So many you had to get one on your forehead. Little Wayne wannabe, with no self identity.

Brandy, you must realize that there is no excuse in modern society for this type of murder. There is also no justification for allowing such a menace to continue to threaten peaceable citizens. If this was your mother or child who was murdered by a heartless scumbag, I'm sure you would be singing a different tune. Try to look past the surface and realize that we as a society have to maintain a safe environment for the law-abiding masses. The world is not a playground for thugs who feel they can do what they want without repercussions.

The majority here is correct that you are acting selfish and ignorant. People have every right to comment here, it's just that you don't seem to agree with the public opinion in this case.

I taught this kid in middle school for several years and I begin to type I am saddened. I have too many times opened the newspaper link and saw former students with their face plastered for the whole world to see for bad and sometimes horrific decisions. I am not surprised at all by what he has done. There is a pattern within our school system. Law enforcement needs to play a much bigger role in identifying these students at an early age. He got kicked out of school so many times, that you would not believe. A true waste of space! I and fellow teachers tried to get through to him and get him to see that there will be consequences to his decisions. His family perpetuated the problem. I'm saying that I could have pointed to this person when he was a child and told you that he would end up this way!!! That is profound. If we as a community could be more proactive, how many lives would be saved. It's just wrong, so wrong. He had the world on a string. Our community, our parents, our education system, our judicial system cannot afford to keep making the same mistakes over and over again! This goes to show you, when a person shows you their true colors, you better believe them! No more words.

I'm sick if people playing the "blame game". It does not matter what he has been through in the past nor how he was raised. He knew darn good and well the difference between right and wrong. If he places his hand in fire and he gets hurt he knows that its wrong to touch fire again. That means he knows the difference between right and wrong. Yes people have had bad lives and horrible things have happened to them but that does not mean to kill someone if that's the case there would be a lot of dead people in the world cause at some point everyone has had it bad. Shoot if you got it that bad kill yourself. I am a single working mother of 3 boys. And you best believe I am not afraid to draw my weapon when I hear a knock on my door. I am always notified by text or call that someone is coming and even then I still who it is....with my gun in my hand! Stop sticking up for this waste of space cause you sound pathetic and in my eyes guilty as the killer.

Brandy007 The others are exactly right. What could a person go through to make them react with that sort of behavior? Please tell us, we want to know. He deserves to DIE. There is no need to waste taxpayers dollars on a trial. He needs to be hung on the courthouse steps. And for a silly comment like the one you made, you need a few years behind bars. Maybe there you will learn how to write and spell without using so many grammatical errors. I see why you are so on the defensive about this piece of trash! You are pathetic!

This wannabe Lil Wayne clown stayed in trouble since middle school. Always tryna be like some rapper, which is sad. I don't understand why his family or whoever kept wasting money bailing him out of jail when he was just getting out to do the same thing and now he gonna do some serious time.

We should be given the names of the judges that granted bail so we can vote their worthless butts out of office. The lawyer that defended him should be shut down, never to practice again. Better than that, the governor should make them both step down immediately. Some how we have to have some accountability here. We can't keep looking the other way. Young thugs are trying to just take over. I stay locked and loaded at my home. I don't open the door. Usually when I am outside my home I am carrying. Don't blame police officers for this worthless peice of junk being back on the street, blame the lawyers and judges. Officers arrest them but the lawyers and judges let them go.

First of all Brandy you don't need to capitalize ever word in the sentence it's incorrect grammar.. Next, I don't care what he has "been through" he is a worthless murderer.. A stain, a nothing, a parasite on our community.. He killed someone's dad, someone's brother, uncle.. He killed somebody that didn't ask to die and didn't deserve to die.. However, he deserves to die.. He deserves it now.. I just hope he hasn't reproduced before the state can kill his worthless butt..

Brandy

Congratulations, you are officially awarded a SCUM Defender award. It is reserve for people like you who make excuses and sympathize with criminal trash that deserves the electric chair, or better yet, hanging.

When are you going to grow up. Are up you 12 years old or something? Someone's background DOES NOT justify a life of crime, and give you some sort of free pass to shoot, rob, and kill your way through life. You need to unscrew your head, dump out the garbage there, and start over.

And for those who want to know, we have some of the worst judges in the state. Judith Daniels, Carter, and Carmical are the worst for allowing these thugs to get a slap on the wrist and return on the street to begin their predations again.

G

I hope this punk fries, or gets the injection, very soon!

This kid has loser written all over him. His life must have gone into a serious downward spiral a long time ago.

One dead and another wounded and it will only be news for a few days! If the deceased were a well known, prominent member of society we would be hearing a lot for a long time. I didn't know Mr. Manning but nobody deserves to die like this.

People like this give me reason to be very cautious about opening my door after dark. My family and friends have cell phones and they all know to call before they knock. Otherwise, they may be greeted at the front door by someone loaded for bear!

I absolutely don't want to get into any altercations but I wouldn't hesitate to pop a cap in the defense of my family and my life!

May God Bless the soul of Mr Manning. According to the record of Rothwell, he was a danger to society and should not have been dwelling around the rest of the law abiding citizens of Robeson Co. This young man will now be a Burden of the County and The State. We as taxpayers will have to clothe, feed and provide medical care for this man. I, as a taxpayer, have to make decisions about my house hold utilities on a daily basis. Gas prices are going up, food prices going up but the responsibility of law enforces in Robeson Co. is going down. Something should be done. We as tax payers should come together. This is not right, someone like Rothwell should not be allowed to walk the streets with us.

This was pre-meditated murder. Hopefully, now that we have a Governor with cajones, literally, we won't have to be paying for this person for long.

Hey Dianne, Harry, and yes Mr. President, was a lack of background checks or the availability of high cap mags to blame here? How about if this scumbag had already been executed for his past crimes he would not have been able to commit these. Now wouldn't that be a more effective deterrent than banning my wepons.

Everyone should call or email our Senator Hagan and let her know we EXPECT her to vote no to ANY laws that affect the ones of us who are law abiding. My right to own as many assault weapons as I want will never be a threat to anyone except people like this piece of trash. Another good start would be for politicians, lawyers and judges to see the blood they have on their hands when people like this are released back into our midst.

In Brandy's case, there is no getting through to some people. They can't see beyond themselves. As long as the person he murdered isn't someone they know, it doesn't seem to matter. Disturbing...
