LUMBERTON — A 20-year-old Lumberton man who has a long history of being charged with violent crimes has been arrested for first-degree murder in a shooting death that occurred on Sunday.
Shilec Rothwell, of 3587 Dallas Road, was charged Tuesday with the murder of 61-year-old Willie Manning, of 135 Stealth Drive, Maxton, according to Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.
Rothwell, whose four-page criminal record dates back to 2008, was also charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious bodily injury, felonious breaking and entering, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Manning died from multiple gunshot wounds Sunday night, according to sheriff’s Capt. Anthony Thompson. A second person, Daniel McLaughlin, 54, of the same address, underwent emergency surgery after suffering gunshot wounds and is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Sealey said McLaughlin answered the door to find Rothwell, who was asking for gasoline. The sheriff said McLaughlin was in the kitchen looking for a container to hold the gasoline when Rothwell broke into the home and shots were fired.
James Obershea, a homicide detective, made the arrest. Sealey said the investigation is continuing, and lawmen are looking for two more people whom they believe were with Rothwell.
Rothwell’s criminal history includes pending charges for armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and assault inflicting serious injury, but he was free on bail. His bonds for during 2012 totaled $125,500.

The majority here is correct that you are acting selfish and ignorant. People have every right to comment here, it's just that you don't seem to agree with the public opinion in this case.
I wonder if you realize what you just said. And so many people try to say the rapper lifestyle isn't a bad influence on black youth...
Congratulations, you are officially awarded a SCUM Defender award. It is reserve for people like you who make excuses and sympathize with criminal trash that deserves the electric chair, or better yet, hanging.
When are you going to grow up. Are up you 12 years old or something? Someone's background DOES NOT justify a life of crime, and give you some sort of free pass to shoot, rob, and kill your way through life. You need to unscrew your head, dump out the garbage there, and start over.
And for those who want to know, we have some of the worst judges in the state. Judith Daniels, Carter, and Carmical are the worst for allowing these thugs to get a slap on the wrist and return on the street to begin their predations again.

I hope this punk fries, or gets the injection, very soon!
One dead and another wounded and it will only be news for a few days! If the deceased were a well known, prominent member of society we would be hearing a lot for a long time. I didn't know Mr. Manning but nobody deserves to die like this.
People like this give me reason to be very cautious about opening my door after dark. My family and friends have cell phones and they all know to call before they knock. Otherwise, they may be greeted at the front door by someone loaded for bear!
I absolutely don't want to get into any altercations but I wouldn't hesitate to pop a cap in the defense of my family and my life!
Everyone should call or email our Senator Hagan and let her know we EXPECT her to vote no to ANY laws that affect the ones of us who are law abiding. My right to own as many assault weapons as I want will never be a threat to anyone except people like this piece of trash. Another good start would be for politicians, lawyers and judges to see the blood they have on their hands when people like this are released back into our midst.
