James Carl ‘J.C.’ Tyler
James Carl “J.C.” Tyler departed this life at home on Oct. 18, 2012, after an extended illness.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cephus Tyler; his mother, Sadie Tyler Arnette; and a brother, Ned Albert Tyler.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Vivian Watkins Tyler; his daughter, Sarah “Randi” Tyler Turner and her husband David of Concord; his son, Nicholas Caleb Tyler and his wife Tiffany of Lumberton; his grandson, David Jackson Watkins Tyler of Lumberton; his granddaughter, Madison Claire Tyler of Lumberton; two sisters, Edna Tyler Wright of Fayetteville, and Mary Tyler Smith and her husband Jerry of Lumberton; three brothers, William F. “Bill” Tyler and his wife Janet of Asheboro, Carroll “Pete” Tyler of Granbury, Texas. and Kenneth W. “Kenny” Tyler of Little Rock, Ark.; and many nephews, nieces and extended family.
J.C. was born on Aug. 24, 1940, in the Broadridge Area. After graduating from high school at Littlefield, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country from 1958 to 1962. After leaving the service, he went to work at Lumberton Motors before taking a job with Toledo Carolina, Inc. He retired from Toledo Carolina in 2003 after 38 years of service. J.C. was a faithful member of East Lumberton Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for more than 40 years, served as church clerk for 40 years, and served as a deacon for 37 years. J.C. also helped serve as sound technician for church services for many years. Serving his church was one of his greatest joys. One of his other joys was assisting his wife, Mary Vivian, with preparing the yearly Christmas programs at the schools where she teaches.
J.C. was diagnosed with cancer on July 22, 2011. Rather than lie down in the face of his diagnosis, he went on as he called it “a journey chasing life.” He was able to walk the survivors’ lap at the 2012 Relay for Life alongside his wife.
The visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc. At other times, the family will receive visitors at their home.
A celebration of J.C.’s life will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at East Lumberton Baptist Church, the Rev. Richard Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in East Lumberton Baptist Church, a place very near and dear to J.C.
A. Crowell Holcomb
A. Crowell Holcomb, 59, of Laurinburg, passed away Oct. 19, 2012.
The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Debra Harris Holcomb; his son Christian Lee Holcomb and wife Tricia Liberatore Holcomb of Raleigh; his daughter, Jessica Ellen Holcomb and her husband Tanner Wade Webb of Pawley’s Island, S.C.; his sister, Jennifer H. McCormick and her husband Jack Smith McCormick Jr. of Mooresville; his grandchildren, John Hunter Holcomb and Austin Crowell Holcomb; and nieces, Erin McCormick Miller and husband Nick Miller, and Holly McCormick McKinney and husband Brockton McKinney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Crowell Holcomb Sr. and mother, Virginia Harrelson Holcomb.
Crowell graduated from Rowland High School in 1971 and attended UNC Chapel Hill and East Tennessee State University. He later served as finance manager with TranSouth from 1976-2001, and was finance manager at Home Credit Corporation from 2001-2012.
He also served as past president of Laurinburg Kiwanis Club and as chairman of the board of commissioners of Laurinburg Housing Authority. He was an active member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, where he has served as a deacon and elder.
Crowell loved bluegrass music and played banjo for the McFarland Road Bluegrass band. He would transcend to another place whenever he played his music leaving all his troubles behind him. He was happiest playing his banjo and watching his grandchildren play. He was honorable, brave and faithful to his family, friends, church and community. He was true and steady, a rock of strength to loved ones.
The visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Gertrude McCall, 99, of Laurinburg, died Oct. 17, 2012.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in McColl, S.C. Interment will follow in Fair Plains Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Harris of McColl, S.C.
The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Jackson Funeral Home in Laurinburg.
Almeta Scott, 91, of 1847 N.C. 20 East St. Pauls, died Oct. 18, 2012, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Church of God, Elder Alexander Glover officiating. Burial will follow in Markham Memorial Gardens in Durham.
She is survived by two daughters, Melba J. Bateman of Montgomery, Ala., and Armilee McGeachy of St. Pauls; a brother, James Field; two sisters, Katherine Harper and Dollie M. Nixon; four stepgrandchildren; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Margaret Gillespie Barnhill
Margaret Gillespie Barnhill, 85, of 66 Daywall Road, died Oct. 11, 2012, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Baptist, the Rev. Phillip Marks and Apostle Amelia McLean officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by two brothers, Jimmy O. Johnson and Louis McCormick

Donald Ray Hayes, 57, of Orrum, died Oct. 19, 2012, after an accident.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Barnesville Baptist Church in Barnesville. Burial will follow at Lake View Cemetery.
Hayes is survived by two sons, James Ray Hayes and John Ashley Hayes; three brothers, Edward Hayes Jr., Jimmy Hayes and Larry Wayne Hayes; two sisters, Katie Lee Morris and Wanda H. Cook; and two grandsons.
The visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at Barnesville Baptist Church.

Ediberto Velasquez Morales, 19, of St. Pauls, died Oct. 16, 2012.
