William “Bill” Chester Williford, 89, of Lumberton, died Dec. 11, 2012.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Biggs Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. David Elks officiating. Entombment will follow in Gardens of Faith Cemetery Mausoleum in Lumberton.
Williford was born in Wilson County, July 11, 1923. He was the son of the late Thaddeus and Mary Sharp Williford of Wilson County.
Williford was wounded while serving his country during World War II in the European Theatre where he received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
He received a Masters Degree from N.C. State University in Adult Education and Agronomy.
During his professional tenure he worked for Wood Seed Company, Richmond, Va. He then worked as the 4-H Agent in Nash County for seven years, in Hoke County as County Extension Chairman for 10 years, and as Robeson County Extension Chairman for 18 years.
Williford was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Lumberton Rotary Club, Farm Bureau, Livestock and Crop Promotion Association, and the Beekeepers of Robeson County. He received national, state, and local recognition as a National Winner of Youth Development, Agriculture Agent of the Year in North Carolina, and Jaycee Man of the Year in 1960.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Eason; his sisters, Nannie W. Fleming, Grace W. Daughtridge, Nell W. Proctor and Emily W. Elmore; and his brothers, C.T. Williford and J. Samuel Williford.
He is survived by his wife, Lorena Strickland Williford; sister, Ruth W. Robinson; and many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday before the service at Biggs Funeral Home.
