Ester Hedrick
CONCORD — Ester O. Hedrick, 68, of Concord, formerly of 333 Ambay Road, was born on March 26, 1944, in Robeson County. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Oxendine (Emma). She passed through death into life eternal on Jan. 12, 2013, after a prolonged disability.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Chapel Community Baptist Church, the Revs. Jimmy Strickland and Bill James Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in Oxendine Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill Hedrick; two brothers, Forace Oxendine and Chesley Oxendine Jr.; and two sisters, Iona Jacobs Ransom and Della Locklear.
Hedrick is survived by her son, Jerry Hedrick (Penny) of Concord; his children, Moriah Hedrick and William Cheyenne Hedrick of Lumberton; his stepchildren, Jessica Plummer and Erica Scott of Concord; a son, Jamie Hedrick (Redella); his children, Jacob Hedrick, Tess Hedrick and son Ryan Hunt of Concord; her sister, Lucy Thomas of Pembroke; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Hedrick graduated from Pembroke High School in 1961. She moved to Charlotte and lived with her sister Della. Hedrick worked in banking from the “key punch” days. She worked at several different banks, including First Union, BB&T, and Lumbee Bank. In fact, she was one of the first tellers of Lumbee Bank.
After retirement from banking, she worked briefly with LRDA, assisting with the energy program as an intake specialist taking applications for help.
Hedrick found a second career and her true calling working as a front desk clerk at the UNC Pembroke’s Mary Livermore Library. She came from a family that valued education and took great delight in helping the students. She had a special group of co-workers and enjoyed celebrating life events with them.
Hedrick loved to help people. She had such a tender heart that, although she was a UNC basketball fan, she would sometimes root for the other team if the Tar Heels were running away with the game. She said she felt sorry for them.
Hedrick lived with zest. She enjoyed working in her flower beds and watching the hummingbirds and bluebirds in her yard. She liked fashionable clothes, Elvis, John Wayne, and dancing. But she found the true meaning of life when she accepted Jesus as her Savior. Coming to faith later in life, she loved her Sunday school class members. She also loved participating in the Wednesday night Bible study and talking to people about Jesus.
After Hedrick suffered a debilitating cerebral aneurysm in 2010, her sons moved her to Concord in order to care for her. While her body was crippled, her spirit remained strong. She still enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, extended family, and a host of friends who visited from time to time.
Special thanks to the members of Union Chapel Community Baptist Church, who showered Ester with love and visited her often after she moved to Concord; New Life Church of Jesus Christ in Concord for their love and prayers; and her caregivers, including Julie Solomon and Ann Kiser.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Union Chapel Community Baptist Church.
The visitation will be one hour before the services at the church.
