Monday’s Roundup: UNCP’s football opener to be televised

The Lumberton and St. Pauls girls soccer teams will host first-round playoff games Wednesday at their respective schools, the NCHSAA announced Monday.

The Pirates (15-4-1) earned a No. 2 seed from the Southeastern Conference and will host South View (8-11-4), the No. 3 seed from the Mid-South Conference, at 7 p.m.

It will be the third time the teams have played this season, with Lumberton getting both wins during the regular season.

St. Pauls (2-8), the only 2A team in the Three Rivers Conference, is playing Ern Randolph (9-5), the No. 4 seed from the Mid-State Conference. The teams never met in the regular season. A start time was not announced at press time.

Baseball and softball playoff brackets will be announced Wednesday.

UNCP football opener to be televised

PEMBROKE The University of North Carolina at Pembroke football team will open its season in front of a national television audience.

It was announced Monday that the Braves Sept. 5 game at home against national runner-up Winston-Salem State will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.

The game is the first of six included as part of a regular season football package put together by NCAA Division II and the network, which is available to Time Warner Cable, DirecTV and Dish Network customers.

It will mark the first national television appearance for any of UNCPs 16 varsity athletic teams. To accommodate the television broadcast, kickoff has been moved to 8 p.m.

Chavis, Rams miss state tourney

PINEHURST The Purnell Swett golf team narrowly missed a state berth, finishing fifth in the 4A East regional golf tournament Monday at Pinehurst No. 6.

The Rams finished shot a team total of 319, finishing five strokes behind third-place finisher Wilmington Laney, and junior Justin Chavis shot a 2-over-par 73 but lost a three-hole playoff that would have sent him to state.

Im very proud of this team, Purnell Swett coach Jamie Locklear said. They did a good job.

In addition to Chavis, James Chavis shot a 77 and Warren Bowen had a 79 for the Rams. Tanner Collins, a junior, struggled at times and a finished at 91.

Pinecrest won the team title with a 290.

As individuals, Lumbertons Colby Johnson shot a 79 and Thomas Miller shot an 86.

Moore drops to 22nd in Super Regional

LAKELAND, Fla. UNCPs Meghan Moore turned in a 6-over-par 78 and fell into a five-way tie for 22nd place following the second round of the NCAA Super Region 2 tournament Monday at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla.

Moore (+11) is nine strokes off the lead, set by Lynns Samantha Smolen, who carded an even-par round on Monday to vault four spots atop the individual leaderboard. The UNCP senior, who registered a 5-over-par 77 in Sundays first round, had eight bogeys and a pair of birdies Monday.

The Super Regional finishes today.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Daytona Beach.

Braves seeded 5th in PBC bracket

PEMBROKE UNCP baseball was given the No. 4 seed in the Peach Belt Conference baseball tournament, which starts Wednesday in Greenwood, S.C.

The Braves play host Lander in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament, with the teams meeting up at 5 p.m. USC Aiken is the top seed.

The tournament runs through Sunday.
