Mother says UNCP camps were valuable experience for daughter

To the Editor,

Last month, my daughter attended two camps at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and both were outstanding. I would like to commend the university and more specifically the Regional Center and Givens Performing Arts Center for a job well done.

The first week was a Sports Camp that was organized by the staff of the Regional Center. My daughter had the opportunity to learn about a variety of sports, being a part of a team and how sports can be fun and a part of a healthy lifestyle. The program was very well-organized with excellent supervisors and instructors. The campers also had a great lunch at the Student Center on campus every day.

The second week was G-Camp, which was hosted by GPAC. This camp focused on theater and exposed the campers to being a part of a real production with make-up, costumes, stage lights and being a part of a cast. The kids practiced all week and performed “Blackbeard the Pirate” on Saturday. The show was awesome and my daughter really enjoyed being a parrot while others shined as mermaids, crabs, pirates and beach bums. Again, the camp was very well structured and the staff of GPAC and the employees of the production company worked fantastic with the kids.

Local businesses provided the campers with lunch each day and both camps were sponsored by several organizations in our county. These camps were an excellent opportunity for children to be engaged with our local university and have new learning experiences. Again, thank you to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke for making it possible and I encourage everyone to learn more about the summer camps that we have in our area and encourage participation for the future of our children. I am sure you would find it to be a valuable experience.
