Free health and safety fair set at Pembroke

PEMBROKE — The Pembroke Housing Authority, HealthKeeperz, and the town of Pembroke will hold a free health and safety fair on Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at 700 Roberts Ave.

HealthKeeperz Pharmacy will provide information on prescribed medications, which will include identifying duplicate medications and coordinating daily administration. Door prizes as well as refreshments will be available, and Kerr Drug of Pembroke will provide flu shots for a small fee.

Teen Hip-Hop Health conference scheduled

LUMBERTON — Sign-ups are being accepted for the third annual Robeson County Teen Hip-Hop Health Conference for Oct. 6 from 9:30 a.m to 2 p.m. at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

The event, open to youths ages 10 to 19 and their parents, will feature a talent show and performances from dance groups, poets, rappers and singers. Speakers will cover health topics such as bullying, underage drinking and healthy relationships.

SRMC to host free health fair

LUMBERTON — Southeastern Regional Medical Center’s Bladen County-based clinics — Southeastern Health Center Clarkton, Southeastern Medical Clinic White Lake and Southeastern Medical Clinic Bladenboro — will host a free health fair at the Cape Fear Farmers Market at 106 Martin Luther King Drive in Elizabethtown on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free health screenings will be offered for total cholesterol and HDL, blood sugar, and height/weight/BMI. Providers from Southeastern Heart Center will also provide free screenings for peripheral vascular disease.Representatives from Southeastern’s Community Health Services Department and a variety of specialty clinics will also be on hand to provide information about various health conditions and treatments.

Weight-loss seminars to be held

LUMBERTON — Dr. Eric Velazquez, of Southeastern Surgical Center, will host seminars on a variety of weight loss surgery options, including adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, on Sept. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m.

The seminar will be held at Southeastern Weight Loss Center inside the Southeastern Health Mall on the campus of Biggs Park Mall.

Dr. Barry Williamson, of Lumberton Surgical Associates, will host a seminar on LAP-BANDTM on Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m., also at the weight loss center.

Support group for visually impaired to meet

LUMBERTON — Anyone who is blind or visually impaired and their family members are invited to a kick-off meeting for a new support group on Oct. 11.

The meeting will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in Community Classroom I on the main campus of Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month at this meeting time and place.
