LUMBERTON — With its annual Day of Caring a day away, United Way of Robeson County is still seeking donations of nonperishable food.

The Day of Caring will be held Friday at Lumberton Chevrolet on Linkhaw Road beginning at 9 a.m.

Food can be dropped off today at the United Way office, located at 2512A Fayetteville Road, Lumberton Chevrolet, Lumberton City Hall, and Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation in Red Springs.

The food will be donated to the Robeson County Church and Community Center, Southeastern Family Violence Center, Lumberton Christian Care Center, BART, Sacred Pathways and My Refuge.

Starting Friday, residents can give food donations directly to volunteers at the following grocery stores throughout the county:

— In Lumberton: Walmart, Lowes Foods and Lumberton Wholesale, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

— In Pembroke: Walmart, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

— In Red Springs: Walmart Express and Piggly Wiggly, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

— In Fairmont: Bo’s Food Store and Dollar General, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Food can also be brought to Lumberton Chevrolet on Friday, where there will be kids activities, a blood drive, registration for bone marrow donations and a knit-in.

No experience is necessary to help knit hats, blankets and other items that will be donated to local cancer patients.

Residents can keep the giving spirit alive on Saturday as well with the U.S. Postal Services’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which is part of the Day of Caring.

Post office employees and United Way representatives will spend the afternoon collecting bags of food from around Lumberton and piling them into a U-Haul.

Most Lumberton residents were given a Letter Carrier Food Drive bag in their mailbox in the last few days. To donate to Stamp Out Hunger, fill the bag and leave it by the mailbox or at a post office on Saturday.

Call United Way at 910-739-4249 for information.
