LUMBERTON — On Monday, Robeson County residents can celebrate the annual holiday from work by spending some hard-earned money at downtown sales held in Lumberton and Fairmont.

Lumberton’s annual Labor Day Yard sale is set to begin at 7 a.m.

Local businessman Dick Taylor, an organizer of the event, said he expects this year’s event to bring about 3,000 visitors to about 75 vendors in the downtown plaza.

“They’ll have toys, they’ll have clothes, they’ll have collectibles, antiques, just about anything that anyone wants to empty out of their attic,” he said.

Taylor said Johnny’s Hotdogs and Tyson’s Diner will be serving food while DJ Bobby Bodiford spins popular tunes from different eras.

“It’s just a great day for fun,” Taylor said. “Nothing else is open on Monday, so there’s not much else to do in the area.”

Taylor said the event has drawn people from Bladenboro, Fayetteville and Columbus County.

“It’s been well known for being a real good fun time,” he said.

Fairmont Mayor Charles Kemp says that he, as DJ Dr. Electrode, will man a DJ booth for the first few hours of the town’s Labor Day Sidewalk Sale, which is also set to begin at 7 a.m.

The Undecided Band will perform in front of the Hector McLean Library from 11a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kemp said Johnny’s Hotdogs and Boodoodle, a company that serves snow cones and ice cream, will park food trucks nearby, and baked goods will also be for sale.

“If nothing of else we’ll have plenty of food to feed everyone,” he said.

Kemp said the event began in the 1970s and was restarted in 2006.

“We have tried to make it fun and festive as well as worth your while as a bargain hunter,” he said.
