Narva Chavis

PEMBROKE — Narva Nay Cummings Chavis, 91, of 132 John French Road, went to be with her heavenly Father on Jan. 11, 2013, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at New Prospect Methodist Church, the Revs. Perry Roberts, Eugene Bryant and Donnie Chavis officiating. Burial will follow in the Lowry Cemetery, Oak Grove Church Road, Burnt Swamp.

She was one of seven children of the late Archie Ceawell Cummings and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Locklear Cummings. Her mother passed when she was a young girl and she spent many of her teenage years in Lake Butler, Florida with her uncle, Redman Cummings. Narva married the late John French Chavis, Sr. and they had six children.

A widow of 25 years, Narva was a member of New Prospect Methodist Church. She loved her church, its people and attended as often as her health allowed. Narva was renowned for her picture framing and precision wood work. However, she was especially known for her cross-stitching artistry. Several of her cross-stitching works were featured on Christmas cards and in a showing at her church where she was recently honored by the Philadelphus Cluster Group for her outstanding contributions to her family, church and community. As the matriarch of the Chavis family, she enjoyed cooking and always wanted holiday and special occasions to be celebrated at her home. One of her recent highlights of the past year was her 91st birthday party hosted by her children in May with several hundred family and friends from her church and community in attendance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John French; her oldest son, John French (Buck) Chavis, Jr.; her youngest son, Mitchell Howard Chavis.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Chavis, Geneva (Genny) Sutton (Ronnie), Deloise Chavis; a son, Carl Chavis (Gelena), all of Pembroke; a brother, James Cummings of Pembroke; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Revels Funeral Home Sunday, and other times at the family home at 132 John French Road at other times.
