LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man was killed in a fight that broke out during a card game on Saturday, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

James Andrew Haggans, 43, has been charged with second-degree murder for stabbing his 44-year-old friend and neighbor, Derek Anthony Loney, according to Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives.

Deputies were called to Loney’s Alamac Village Drive home at about 2 a.m. on Saturday. According to Thompson, the men, as well as several others, had been playing cards in an outside building when a fight broke out.

“It escalated to Haggans cutting and stabbing Loney,” Thompson said.

Loney was being transported to the hospital and Haggans had left the home when deputies arrived, but they were able to find him in the area, Thompson said. Thompson said there were “multiple witnesses” but no one else was injured.

Haggans has been jailed under a $50,000 secured bond. Thompson said no more arrests are expected.
