PEMBROKE — A 27-year-old Pembroke man was killed Wednesday when a car he was a passenger in ran off the road and overturned, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Deshane Ramon Locklear, of Roberts Avenue, was in the front right seat of a 2007 Chevrolet truck that wrecked just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a report by Trooper J.R. Locklear.

The truck was being driven by 29-year-old Hiram Frank Harris on Deep Branch Road about three miles west of Pembroke, the report said. When Harris swerved to avoid traffic that had stopped ahead, his vehicle struck a ditch and overturned before coming to a rest on the shoulder.

Riley Nicole Scott, 14, also of Roberts Avenue, was in the middle seat. Scott and Harris were taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Their conditions were not available.

Harris was driving about 70 mph in the 55-mph zone; none of the three were wearing seat belts.

According to 1st Sgt. Ardeen Hunt, charges may be filed against Harris, who lives on Kyra Lane.
