LUMBERTON The Lumberton softball team came back from spring break with one of the seasons biggest wins, beating previously undefeated Jack Britt 5-4 in 10 innings.

The Pirates (8-7) trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, but got four runs to send it to extra innings and scored the game-winner with two outs in the 10th.

That was a big win for our program, Lumberton coach Mackie Register said.

The game-winning run was scored by Summer Prevatte, who was hit by a pitch with two outs in the 10th inning. She stole second and third bases, then scored on a liner by Jordan Jones.

The game was otherwise a pitchers duel, with Britts Stephanie Thomas racking up 11 strikeouts and Lumbertons Meagan Skipper getting nine.

Fairmont softball beats St. Pauls

ST. PAULS The Fairmont softball team got ahead early and didnt let up in a 9-5 win over St. Pauls Tuesday.

The Golden Tornadoes went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning and never let up, scoring seven combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings to get their lead as high as 9-0. St. Pauls didnt score until the bottom of the six, when the Bulldogs rallied for five runs.

LHS baseball, softball dates changed

LUMBERTON Because of storms scheduled to hit the area Friday, the Lumberton baseball and softball games with Pinecrest will instead be played Thursday. Times will remain the same with varsity games starting at 7 p.m.

Moore leads Braves to 5th-place finish

CHARLOTTE All-American Meghan Moore recorded her 26th career top 10 finish to lead the 12th-ranked UNCP womens golf team to a fifth place finish at the Belmont Abbey-hosted United States Womens Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Pine Island Country Club.

Moore finished two strokes off the lead in sixth place and two-time all-conference selection Shauna Walor finished in a tie for 20th place the 33rd time in her career that she has finished among an events top 20 golfers.

Cloningers 74 helps UNCP men

GOLDSBORO Trent Cloninger shot a 2-over-par 74 to record his first career top 10 finish and lead the UNCP mens golf team to a fifth place standing after the final round of the Mount Olive Spring Invitational at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Goldsboro.

Cloninger, who carded a season-best 71 on Monday, finished in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard. Michael Mullmann completed the event in a tie for 15th.

UNCP track stays in 2nd regionally

PEMBROKE Despite having the weekend off from competition, the UNCP mens track and field team continues in second in the second week of the 2013 regional rankings announced by United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday. Mount Olive is ranked first in the region, with UNCP second. Wingate, Limestone, King, Lenoir-Rhyne, North Greenville, Columbus State, Carson-Newman and Augusta State round out the rankings. The team also has numerous athletes ranked individually.

UNCP tennis loses home finale

PEMBROKE Senior Mia Winterbottom came up big for the UNCP tennis team on senior day with a win in doubles and singles, but the Lady Braves were not able to make up for a 2-1 deficit after doubles action and fell to Lander, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the UNCP Varsity Tennis Courts.

The match marked the end of regular-season Peach Belt Conference competition.
