PEMBROKE — Purnell Swett’s girls tennis team fought their way to a 5-3 win over Scotland on Thursday in Pembroke, finishing off the Scots in singles with a pair of tiebreaker wins by Mary Scott and Genna Locklear.

In singles action, Leslie Floyd (S) def. Kali Strickland 6-3, 6-3; Sallie Wegner (S) def. Nikana Oxendine 6-0, 6-1; Joyce Cummings (PS) def. Anna Griswold 6-0, 6-1; Genna Locklear (PS) def. Camryn Ellis 2-6, 6-4, 10-6; Mary Scott (PS) def. Isabella Whitehead 7-5, 6-7 (2), 10-8; and Mikayla Gilmore (S) def. Brooke Huggins 6-3, 6-3.

“What a huge victory for a determined bunch of young ladies,” said head coach David Leek, who celebrated his team’s first victory over the Lady Scots in the school’s 30-year history on his 50th birthday. “Joyce is a senior and she really led us to victory. I’m so proud of her and the leadership she provides. Genna Locklear also came up big for us and I wish all the girls hated to lose as much as she does. Mary Scott also gutted out a huge victory for us. We were undefeated in tie-breakers to decide a match and that was crucial.

“It’s not the same Scotland team that tied for the conference championship a year ago, but it’s still the name and still those red and blue colors on the opposite side of the net. I’m just so proud of the girls and the effort they put forth. What a great 50th birthday present. I’ll never forget it and the 17 ladies on this team. I love them all.”
