Lumber Bridge soldier dies in Afghanistan

FT. BRAGG — A soldier from Lumber Bridge based at Fort Bragg has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Monday that Staff Sgt. Girard D. Gass Jr., 33, died Sunday at Jalalabad Air Field Hospital from a non-combat incident while on patrol in Nangarhar Province. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Gass was assigned to Company C, 3rd Special Forces the 1st Battalion.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that Gass was on his second deployment to Afghanistan and was posthumously awarded his second Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He enlisted in the Army in August 2008 and reported to the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg after his initial training and the Special Forces Qualifications Course in August 2011.

The newspaper also said that Gass served as a Special Forces medical sergeant and his awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with valor device, Army Achievement Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals and National Defense Service Medal.
