Phantom Ball seeking donations

LUMBERTON — You’re not invited to the Robeson County Community Foundation’s fifth annual Phantom Ball.

But don’t feel bad — no one is. And the lack of an invitation certainly isn’t stopping you from donating to the effort.

Robeson County residents and supporters are asked to make donations to the Robeson County Unrestricted Endowment Fund.

The logic behind the non-event is that the foundation saves money by not holding a fancy catered gala.

Since 2008, the Robeson County Community Foundation has provided more than $37,000 in grants to local nonprofits through the fund, with the Phantom Ball campaign serving as the foundation’s primary annual fundraiser.

“Contributions to the fund will result in local nonprofits receiving grants forever,” said Eric Dent, co-founder of the ball and foundation board member. “That’s an amazing concept.”

Phantom Ball donations received between now and Nov. 30 will be matched through the North Carolina Community Foundation’s Chairman’s Challenge Campaign. Contributions, which are tax-deductible, can be mailed to Robeson CCF, P.O. Box 991, Wilmington, N.C., 28402.

The Robeson County Community Foundation is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation, which partners with 60 affiliate foundations to provide local resource allocation, technical support and community assistance in 67 counties across the state.

Some of the organizations that have reaped the actual cash rewards of the imaginary ball in the past include Lumberton Rescue and EMS, the Pembroke Housing Authority, the Red Springs Historical Museum, the Robeson County Church and Community Center, the Robeson Health Care Corporation and the Robeson County Partnership for Children.

In addition to the Robeson County Unrestricted Endowment Fund, the Robeson County Community Foundation administers 16 additional endowment funds with a combined asset value of more than $500,000.

Abe Marshall is president of the Robeson County Community Foundation. Board members include Kenny Biggs; Annette Burke; Jim Byrne; Eric Dent; Bruce Huggins; Susie Jones, R.D. Locklear; Bryan Maynor; Jim Parker; Maria Parker; Sylvia Pate; Lenore Taylor; and Ken Windley.
