FAIRMONT - Police say they've arrested the man who shot a Fairmont woman three times on New Year's Eve.
Michael Ray McLellan forced his way into 21-year-old Teena Lewis' home at gunpoint before beating her and then shooting her, according to police Sgt. Patrick Reed.
Chief Robert Hassell said Lewis was punched several times, shot twice in the torso and once in the leg. She was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where she underwent surgery, and is now recovering at home.
Nothing was reported stolen from the home.
&#8220It's not very clear why he went in to assault Miss Teena Lewis. He had been drinking very heavily earlier that night,” Hassell said.
Police say Lewis' 2-year-old daughter watched as her mother was assaulted.
&#8220The 2-year-old was within arm's reach of her,” Reed said.
Police say McLellan fled Lewis' Meadow Woods Apartments home shortly after 5 a.m. on Dec. 31. McLellan, of 513 Marvin St., was wearing a mask at the time, according to police.
Police say tips from residents led investigators to McLellan, who surrendered to police Friday night.
A .22-caliber handgun believed to have been used in the shooting has been recovered.
Reed charged McLellan with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, first degree burglary and assault on a child under age 12, all felonies. He was jailed on a $33,000 bond.
