PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett softball team’s late rally came up short in a 7-6 home loss to Laney.
The Lady Rams, who are now 2-2, trailed 7-4 heading into the final two frames before tightening the gap. Swett, which out-hit the Buccaneers 11-7 and had just three errors to Laney’s seven, had a chance at a game-tying run in the seventh but its rally ended on a double-play at the plate.
Swett starters Kayla Lewis, Cheyene Lowry and Mikala Lowry had two hits apiece. Mo Dial drove in two runs. Leading Laney was Matti Johnston, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, and Sarah Tompkins, who knocked a three-run homer.
