SEC releases all-league, region soccer teams

LUMBERTON Five Lumberton Pirates and a pair of sophomores from Purnell Swett were named to the All-Southeastern Conference soccer team Sunday announced by the league office.

Pinecrest’s Hayden Little shared Player of the Year honors with Hoke’s John Walrath while Hoke coach Derek Butler was rewarded for his Bucks’ second-place finish behind the Patriots in the SEC. Pinecrest’s Garrett Melia and Hoke’s Austin Crowder were named co-keepers of the year.

Representing the Pirates on the 22-member all-conference team were seniors Isaac Bell and Tyler Hammonds, leading goal scorer Colby Johnson, fellow junior Bradley Burnette and first-year player Miguel Bello. Dylan Brooks and Joseph Velasquez were selections for the Rams.

The SEC also had 16 players named to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association’s Region 4 All-Region team. Three Pirates Bell, Burnette and Johnson were included on the list.

SEC champion Pinecrest (19-2-2) saw its season end Saturday night in overtime against New Hanover in the fourth round of the state playoffs. The winner of the Wildcats’ game at Green Hope tonight advances to the 4A state championship game. The rest of the SEC’s playoff qualifiers Hoke (14-9-1), Lumberton (12-10-1) and Richmond (11-6-3) were all first-round exits.

Coaches select all-conference teams prior to the end of the season as well as vote on all-region selections during all-state meetings in Greensboro. Lumberton coach Kenny Simmons is Region 4’s chairman for the NCSCA.
