Sigmon, Johnston lead XC to 2nd place in PBC
FORT GORDON, Ga. — Juniors Tim Sigmon and Joel Johnston captured fifth and sixth place finishes in the 8K, respectively, to garner all-conference laurels and lead the UNCP mens cross country team to its highest finish in the Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga.
The Braves matched their best finish at the championships as the squad also finished second in the 2005, 2010 and 2011 seasons, but improved from third last season. Columbus State was the race champion with 55 points as UNCP trailed by 10 and led Flagler by a margin of 35 points.
“I’m extremely proud of the men’s team today,” said UNCP coach Peter Ormsby. “They raced the race they had to and came up a little short. Joel had a great performance and Wilson stepped up big time. Now we will focus on the regional championships in two weeks.”
Sigmon led the ways for the Braves with a time of 25:20.13, the 18th fastest 8K in school history, and was also named to the PBC All-Sportsmanship Team, while Johnston registered a personal best time by 11 seconds from the PBC Championships last year, as well as moving up a spot from last season as he crossed the finish line with a time of 25:21.82, the 19th fastest time in school history.
Dorn leads XC women to 5th at PBC meet
FORT GORDON, Ga. — Senior Kendra Dorn registered a personal best time in the 6K by more than 30 seconds to lead the UNCP womens cross country team to a fifth place finish in the Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga.
“The ladies came in with nothing to lose and raced extremely tough,” said UNCP coach Peter Ormsby. “We had two groups of three on the course and were still only a minute difference between our top five finishers. If we can replicate that in two weeks, we will have a nice regional meet.”
Dorn collected a 19th place finish which was an 11-spot improvement from last year at the championships as she crossed a finish line with a time of 22:42.54. It’s the the seventh-fastest time in school history. Sophomore Lea Tardanico crossed the finish line with a time of 22:48.04 for a personal best by 23 seconds and a 22nd place finish. The Florida native also finished seven spots higher than last season in the race.
