WHITEVILLE — Fairmont’s golf team kept its substantial lead in the Three Rivers Conference Monday afternoon at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club, beating its nearest competitor, Red Springs, by 45 shots to capture another match with one regular-season outing remaining.
Leading Fairmont’s team score of 337 was medalist Allen Britt who fired a round-best 78. In second, Fairmont’s Aaron Maynor finished with an 83 while teammate Simon Grandios’ 85 tied for third with St. Pauls’ Bryan Muller.
The conference team title and regular season medalist honors will be decided next week at Land-O-Lakes.
Lady Pirates shut out Scots
LAURINBURG — The Lumberton girls soccer team wrapped up second place in the Southeastern Conference with a 3-0 shutout of Scotland Monday night at Scotland High School.
The Lady Pirates (11-5-2, 7-2), who finish second in the SEC behind Pinecrest, scored all three goals in the first half. Michaela Nash initiated the scoring with an early goal and Nicole Bass rounded out the scoring with consecutive goals.
“It may have been the best first half of soccer we’ve played all year,” Lumberton head coach Kenny Simmons said.
In the net, Brittany Bolin and Leiby Cruz shared duties, combing for five saves.
Lumberton hosts rival Purnell Swett at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
