SPRING LAKE (AP) — Police have charged a resident of Spring Lake near Fort Bragg with human trafficking after a woman they say he held captive escaped and sought refuge at the Army post.

Police tell local media that 38-year-old Robin Applewhite is charged with human trafficking, second-degree kidnapping and sexual servitude.

Police say Applewhite picked up a woman in Fayetteville, took her to his home and confined her in the basement with two other women.

Police say for several days the woman was taken to hotels in Charlotte and Raleigh and forced to perform sexual acts for money. She escaped Wednesday after prying open the basement door and fleeing to the post gate.

The other women were freed when police went to Applegate’s home.

It was not clear if Applewhite has an attorney.
