New features added to 2017 NC Watermelon Festival

MURFREESBORO — Watermelon lovers of all ages will see new features at this year’s NC Watermelon Festival.

The 32nd annual festival will be held in Historic Murfreesboro on Aug. 2 through Aug. 5. It will feature its traditional agricultural parade, fireworks, watermelon-eating and seed-spit contests, Little Princess Contest, Little Mr. and Miss Farmer Contest, food fair, craft show, and amusement rides.

New this year will be a SUPER tent/market that will open Aug. 4 at noon and will be lighted to allow nighttime shopping. Along with the regular market hours, it will open at 10 a.m. on Aug. 5 and close at 5 p.m. Merchandise in the SUPER tent includes Limited Edition Watermelon Festival peanuts, hand-painted watermelon merchandise, whole melons, retired Watermelon Festival T-shirts at a very reduced rate, homemade pickles and breads, local pottery, and more. This year’s market has expanded and includes numerous first-time vendors.

Hot-air balloon tethered rides will be offered behind the Municipal Building on Aug. 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The rides will cost $15 per person.

A miniature petting zoo will be open for children of all ages on Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free pony rides also will be available.
