become physically active

LUMBERTON — Go4Life, a national exercise campaign for people over 50, is collaborating with the White House Conference on Aging and Elite Adult Day Care Center to celebrate fitness.

Special activities will be held Monday through Friday at the center, located at 405 Dunn Road, with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Lambda Eta Zeta chapter.

Dr. Charlotte Williams, director of volunteer services at the center and a member of Zeta Phi Beta, will host physical activity programs during the open house, including a special session on line dancing at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Diane Surgeon, an attorney, will sponsor a free workshop on “Planning for Care — Mind, Body and Bank” at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

at Biggs Park on Tuesday

LUMBERTON — Learn about heart health and enjoy a healthy breakfast on Tuesday at 8 a.m. in the retail space beside JCPennEy at Biggs Park Mall. Ash Walker, Southeastern Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation manager, will present a program on “Risk Factors in Heart Health.” The event is sponsored by Biggs Park Mall and Southeastern Health’s Community Health Education Center. LUMBERTON — Candace Langston, a clinical exercise physiologist with Southeastern Health, will present the program “Get Moving” on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Community Health Education Center, located across from the mall office at Biggs Park Mall. Laurinburg Walmart will

give free screenings, tests

LAURINBURG — A free community health and wellness event will be held on Sept. 9 at the Walmart Supercenter, located at 901 U.S. 401.

The event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will offer free healthy food samples, healthy eating tips, health awareness information, sun safety tips, tours of the Wellness on Wheels bus and blood pressure and diabetes screenings. Immunizations will be offered at free or reduced cost based on insurance.

Adult grief support group

to meet at hospice house

LUMBERTON — Southeastern Hospice will host an Adult Bereavement Support Group for adults experiencing grief due to the loss of loved one.

The support group is open to the public and will hold its first meeting on Sept. 10 at 6:30 pm. It will meet each Thursday ending on Oct. 1. Meetings will last about 90 minutes and will be held in the conference room at Southeastern Hospice House at 1100 Pine Run Drive.

Dr. Ben Bahr scheduled to

present findings, research

SOUTHERN PINES — Dr. Ben Bahr, a professor at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, will present his research about dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease at St. Joseph of the Pines.

The event, which will begin at 2 p.m. on Sept. 15, is free to the public. St. Joseph of the Pines is at 100 Waters Drive in Southern Pines.

St. Joseph of the Pines will offer free memory scans before and after Bahr’s presentation, from 1 to 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary. To make a reservation, call 910-246-3125.

Retirement community to

host walk for Alzheimer’s

LUMBERTON — Wesley Pines Retirement Community will host its annual Alzheimer’s Walk for Memory on Oct. 17.

The walk will begin at the retirement community at 1000 Wesley Pines Road. To raise money for Alzheimer’s North Carolina, the organizers of the walk are currently selling raffle tickets for a three-night cruise to the Bahamas.

Raffle tickets are currently on sale for $20 a ticket. Only 250 will be sold. The cruise was donated by Debbie’s Destinations. For information on the walk, or information on purchasing a raffle ticket, call Amy Hammond at 910-272-3006.
