LUMBERTON — Theater lovers have another chance to catch “Steel Magnolias.”

The Carolina Civic Center has announced an encore performance of the timeless tearjerker. Richard Sceiford, executive director of the downtown venue, says the play drew a large turnout last weekend.

“Attendance for the show exceeded all expectations and we know there was strong word of mouth about the quality of the show,” he said. “So we decided to give those who missed it one more chance. Plus, so much work had gone into the amazing set and the cast didn’t want to stop at just three performances.”

Directed by Kendrix Singletary, “Steel Magnolias” ends a decade-long dearth of live drama at the historic theater. The show centers on a gossipy group of Southern women who use kinship to cope with tragedy.

The cast includes Sharon Moyer, Marla Bullock, Sasha Farmer Carroll, Shirley Pait, Stephanie Parnell and Rhonda Mitchell.

“It’s a highly relatable story and it pulls your heart strings,” Singletary told The Robesonian earlier this month. “Everybody knows someone who is like one of these ladies, and people are naturally drawn to things that move them and make them feel.”

The show starts at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets $23 or $17 each with the advance purchase of 10 or more. Admission for students is $10.
