LUMBERTON — Jim Quick and Coastline will again set the stage for Alive After 5 — just not the same stage.

This year’s edition of the outdoor concert series will be held beneath the newly constructed Southeastern Health Performance Shelter in downtown Lumberton. The venue is expected to save the city thousands of dollars by eliminating the need to rent costly stage equipment for Alive After 5 and similar events.

Quick and his band have been involved with the series since it launched in 2004. The Wilmington group, which specializes in Southern rock and surf music, kicks of the series on May 5.

“Jim is a crowd favorite,” said Connie Russ, the downtown coordinator in charge of booking for Alive After 5. “We try to be somewhat flexible and get bands that appeal to all types of people and age groups.”

Other favorites returning this year are Hip Pocket and Band of Oz. A handful of groups will make their series debuts, including River Mist, Sand Band and Punch.

Russ says that concertgoers will be able to buy Italian Ice and craft beer for the first time.

“The series has been very successful because people love to hang out with their friends and listen to a couple of hours of music,” she said. “In the future, we hope to add a couple of concerts to the season. That is all dependent on sponsors and how the series is perceived by the general public. But as long as people support it and continue to come out, we feel we can continue to grow this event and make improvements.”

Other performers and the dates they perform are: River Mist on May 19; Band of Oz on June 2; Punch on June 9; Sand Band on June 16; and Hip Pocket on June 23.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are free to the public.

Lumberton Ford is the primary sponsor of Alive After 5. Other sponsors include BB&T, Budweiser, Lumberton Honda, Lumberton Kia, Southeastern Health, Lumber River Trading Company, True Value, Peterson Toyota, Gill Security Systems and R.A. Jeffrey’s.
