LUMBERTON — A 54-year-old Lumberton man is in the Robeson County jail under no bond after being charged with first-degree murder following a shooting on Friday night.

According to Sheriff Kenneth Sealey, “several witnesses” saw the incident, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. at a home on Odum Road.

Sealey said when deputies arrived after receiving a call, they found the body of Ronnie Lee Sampson on the roof of a home at 385 Odum Road. Sampson, who was 43 years old, lived at Mallard Drive in Lumberton and worked as a roofer. He apparently was on the roof doing a job.

After speaking with witnesses, deputies arrested and charged Jonathan Brent Skipworth, who lives on Greenview Drive, not only with murder, but possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sealey said on Saturday afternoon that he had not had a chance to speak with homicide investigators to get additional details concerning the murder, including a possible motive. A photograph of Skipworth was not available.
