LUMBERTON — Three people filed for municipal elections on Thursday, an incumbent in Fairmont and two challengers, one in Maxton and one in Red Springs.

Terry Evans, 53, a veteran of the U.S. Army, is seeking his second term on the Fairmont Board of Commissioners.

He stressed fiscal responsibility in a statement he provided.

“Four years ago I inherited a town ready to be taken over by the state,” Evans said. “I don’t look at Fairmont as a town, I see it as a business and that is my approach. I will not raise water, sewer, or property taxes. You as citizens are already taxed out.”

Evans is a former member of the Robeson County Planning Board and is serving his fourth term as Democratic Party precinct chairman for the town of Fairmont.

He works as a supervisor at Smithfield Packing in Tar Heel.

Evans is the second to file for a Fairmont board seat. Felecia McLean-Kesler has filed for the Fairmont commission seat she has held since the death in July 2016 of her mother, Amelia McLean, who held it at the time.

In Red Springs, James Tew filed to run for a seat on the town Board of Commissioners.

Tew, 39, a graduate of Fayetteville Technical Community College, drives a truck for Patterson Moving and Storage. He is an ordained elder in the United American Free Will Baptist Church and founder of Warriors for Christ, which hosts an annual back-to-school giveaway, awards scholarships, and hosts food distributions.

Tew and his wife Tammy Tew have three children and three grandchildren.

“I really want to help rebuild the infrastructure of our town,” he said. “We also owe it to our future generations to come to provide better schooling. I want to be the voice of those who are afraid to speak up and those who think that speaking up won’t change anything.”

Tew is the third candidate to file for the board, joining Latora K. Ferguson and DeAndre Gillispie.

Virgil Hutchinson filed Thursday as a candidate for the Maxton Board of Commissioners, but did not provide information to The Robesonian.
