LUMBERTON — A man was arrested and charged Thursday with shooting two women in Red Springs, according to a Robeson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Jerry Oxendine has been charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property causing serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, according to Maj. Anthony Thompson. The Sheriff’s Office did not release Oxendine’s age or address.

Kendra Breeden and Shanelle Locklear were shot about 11 p.m. Wednesday as they sat in a vehicle on the 3000 block of Buie Philadelphus Road, according to Thompson. One woman was shot in the head and the other in the legs. Both women were taken to an unidentified hospital for treatment.

When deputies responded they found Breeden with a gunshot wound and sitting inside her vehicle, according to Thompson. The deputies learned that Locklear also had been shot at that location and taken away before they arrived.

The incident began when Oxendine received a call from his son, who said he was being followed by a man with whom Oxendine and his son were familiar, according to Thompson. Oxendine was waiting on his son on Buie Philadelphus Road when his son arrived and stopped on the shoulder of the road.

Breeden and Locklear arrived in a separate vehicle and stopped in the roadway. Oxendine fired shots that entered the vehicle and struck both victims.

It is believed that there have been prior altercations between Oxendine’s son and the man that was following Oxendine’s son, according to Thompson.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office did not release the ages and addresses of the shooting victims or their conditions.
