LUMBERTON — Three people died this afternoon in a three-vehicle wreck on N.C. 711 near Pine Log Road, according to a state Highway Patrol sergeant.
The wreck took place at 2:55 p.m. about 1.2 miles west of Lumberton, Sgt. Philip Collins said. The incident is under investigation and much information, including the names of the deceased, has not been released.
Collins said one vehicle was traveling west along N.C. 711 and two others were traveling east.
“The driver of the westbound vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control and was struck broadside by vehicle two traveling eastbound,” Collins said.
The westbound vehicle then struck the second eastbound vehicle, the sergeant said.
All three of the deceased appear to be Robeson County residents, Collins said. But the Highway Patrol is withholding their identities until their next of kin are informed.
“We’re having a hard time finding the families, next of kin,” Collins said.
It is the second time in two weeks there has been a multi-fatality accident in the county. On Halloween, two St. Pauls sisters, ages 7 and 10, were killed in a five-vehicle accident on N.C. 20, just west of Interstate 95.
