With today at 5 p.m. being the deadline to contribute to the Empty Stocking Fund, a local car dealership has issued a challenge to other car dealerships.

Bill Shotwell and John Franklin, both of Lumberton Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac, came by our office with a $500 check and challenged other car dealerships to contribute to the Empty Stocking Fund as well. Yesterday was a cold and rainy day, so we understand why contributions were slow to the Empty Stocking Fund. But, the weatherman is promising us clearer skies and warmer temperatures today, so we hope folks will come see us before the 5 p.m. deadline.

We need four more contributions of at least $50 to take full advantage of a pledge of up to $7,500 that will be included in tomorrow’s total. With that factored in, we have raised about $50,000 this year, far below last year’s record of $85,000 and some change, and the $65,000 that has become the average in recent years.

With the $12,000 carryover from last year, we have enough money to provide $50 vouchers to Roses in Lumberton or Fairmont to provide Christmas for 1,240 children. There were 1,950 deemed eligible by the Department of Social Services, so we are hoping for a big day today to get as many of those children checked off Santa’s list as possible.

It’s too late to mail a donation, so if you want to donate come see us at 2175 Roberts Ave. We hope to see you.
