Event to focus on fetal alcohol disorders

LUMBERTON — An informational and training session about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders has been scheduled for April 20.

The free event will be 10 a.m. to noon at Palmer Prevention Inc., located at 3460 Capuano St. in Lumberton. Any woman of childbearing age, and health care professionals and social workers who care for these women and their children are invited to attend. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. the day of the event.

Palmer Prevention will serve as host of the event sponsored by FASDinNC.

Elizabeth Montgomery Lee, an FASDinNC education specialist, will present the program. Participants will receive information about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and how the disorders present in an individual across his or her lifespan. Program goals are to develop in each participant a clear understanding of how alcohol affects a developing brain, and to teach participants how to determine if a child is living with an FASD.

Strategies to cope with some FASD behaviors also will be introduced.
