LUMBERTON — A St. Pauls man was killed and three people were hurt, including a baby that suffered critical injuries, in a two-vehicle accident on Thursday near St. Pauls.
According to a report by Highway Patrol Trooper K.D. Locklear, Elmer Stancel Martin, 39, of 120 S. McGoogan St., Apt. 8, died at the scene of the accident, about three miles west of St. Pauls on N.C. 20.
According to Locklear’s report, Martin was driving a 2005 Ford Focus west at 4:56 a.m. when it drifted left of the center line and struck head-on an eastbound 2013 Chevrolet Cruz with three people inside.
The driver of the vehicle, Keishia Allison Scott, 22, of 1659 NC. 904, Fairmont, and a baby who was in the back seat were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. Sabrina Locklear, 20, of 102 Dillon Road, St. Pauls, a front-seat passenger, was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical.
The report characterized the injuries to the baby as being critical and those to Scott and Locklear as being severe. All were properly restrained.
Martin was not wearing a seat belt.
The report did not indicate why Martin’s vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic. Both vehicles were destroyed.
