Volunteers needed for road cleanup Wednesday

LUMBERTON — Robeson County Clean and Green Committee’s effort to keep the county free of roadside litter continues Wednesday — and some helping hands are needed.

Volunteers are being asked to help pick up trash along N.C. 711 and 72. The day of trash removal begins with people who want to help gathering at the old Department of Social Services parking lot, on N.C. 711. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and litter pickup activities begin at 9 a.m.

Groups of volunteers will pick up trash along both sides of the highways. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and light clothing. Reflective safety vests and gloves will be provided. Light refreshments will be served at the end of the event.

The Robeson County Clean and Green Committee is a grassroots organization that formed in April 2015 as a response to a growing concern about litter becoming widespread in Robeson County. Its mission is the reduction and eventual elimination of litter through education, prevention and enforcement.

The committee consists of businesses, religious organizations, concerned residents, government officials and law enforcement personnel that share the desire to make a Robeson County a cleaner place in which to live. It is supported by the Robeson County Board of Commissioners and the county Solid Waste Department.

“Having a clean and green Robeson County establishes a positive image,” said Raymond Cummings, chairman of the Robeson Board of Commissioners.
