LUMBERTON — A Red Springs man has been charged with killing his nephew, who was shot when an argument escalated.
“There was drinking, and there was an argument,” said Maj. Anthony Thompson, a Robeson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. “We think that may be the motive.”
Ferman Locklear, 45, of 997 Eagle Feather Road in Red Springs, was arrested Thursday and charged with the Wednesday death of Johnathan Locklear. Ferman Locklear was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held in the Robeson County jail without bond.
A call came into 911 dispatch about 2:14 a.m. on Wednesday about a man shot at a residence located at 672 Eagle Feather Drive in Red Springs, which is directly across the street from Ferman Locklear’s residence, Thompson said.
When deputies arrived at the home, Johnathan Lee Locklear, 31, of 54 Moose Drive in Shannon, was found in a bed and bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound, Thompson said.
“The victim was shot once in the left leg and found unresponsive,” Thompson said. “There were two to three people also in the home. Their names are not being released at this time.”
According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, Johnathan Locklear was at a family gathering on Sundance Drive when he and his uncle began arguing and fighting. The fight ended with both men going separate ways. Johnathan Locklear walks to a relative’s residence at 672 Eaglefeather Drive. Ferman Locklear Jr. follows his nephew to the residence, walks inside and shoots Johnathan Locklear in the left leg and leaves.
Johnathan Locklear was flown to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C., for treatment of his injuries. He died Wednesday afternoon.
