LUMBERTON — Pembroke police are waiting on the results of an autopsy to identify the person whose body was found this weekend inside an abandoned home off Pine Street in Pembroke.

The decomposing body of a female was found Sunday as police searched for a person reported missing on Saturday, according to Detective Ed Strickland. Police entered a home with open doors and found the body.

The exact address of the home is not being released.

The Pembroke Police Department used social media on Sunday to ask for help in finding a woman named Rita Maynor.

“We are waiting on dental records and an autopsy report to identify the body,” Strickland said. “… There was a missing person’s report filed on a female subject on Saturday. It is unknown at this time if the person reported missing is the same as the one that was found.”

Maynor had not been located as of Monday afternoon, according to Strickland.

Anyone with information about Maynor or the person who was found dead is asked to call Pembroke police Sgt. Detective Tim Locklear at 910-521-4333.
