WHITEVILLE — A body that was found in a roadside ditch in Columbus County on Sept. 16 has been identified as a 21-year-old Orrum man who went missing a few days before, according to multiple published reports.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says there is evidence that Carlos David Alfonso Jr. was murdered, but information on how he died was not available. Calls made to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office this morning were not answered.

Alfonso Jr. was last seen on Sept. 13, just as Hurricane Florence was preparing to hit North Carolina. His body was found about noon on Sept. 16 in the 8900 block of Joe Brown Highway North, near the Bladen County line, according to Michelle Tatum, a spokesperson for the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh performed an autopsy and confirmed the body was Alfonso.

According to the Whiteville News Reporter, Alfonso was last seen at the Sun Do gas station on Old Boardman Road in Evergreen. Officials said a friend was with Alfonso when Alfonso saw another acquaintance, and left with the unidentified individual. Alfonso left his phone in the friend’s vehicle, according to investigators.

Anyone with information concerning the Alfonso’s whereabouts from Sept.13 to Sept. 16 is asked to contact Detective Matt Parker at 910-640-6629.
