RED SPRINGS — A teen was arrested Tuesday for posting on social media threats of gun violence against Red Springs High School.

The Red Springs High student was arrested at home at about 7 p.m., according to Maj. Kimothy Monroe, of the Red Springs Police Department.

The teen’s name was not released.

The teen was charged with communicating a threat of mass violence on educational property, which is a class H felony, Monroe said. His bond was set at $5,000.

Red Springs police and the State Bureau of Investigation conducted a joint investigation throughout the day to bring the case to a close, Monroe said. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office arrested the student at his home on Buie Philadelphus Road in Red Springs.

“We thank the people who stepped up to the plate to help us resolve this crucial investigation, to include the students and staff of Red Springs High School,” Monroe said. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of the people. This incident began when an intimidating photograph of a gun was circulated around campus that contained words of intimidation and other threatening language.”

More charges are possible, Monroe said.

“There is no room for intimidation and violence in our schools and our main priority today was to keep everyone safe and to find the person responsible,” Chief Ronnie Patterson said. “Any overt action toward violence will not and should not be tolerated.”

The investigation was launched after threatening remarks and a picture of a hand holding a firearm were posted anonymously Monday on Snapchat and shared on Facebook.
