ROWLAND — The Rowland Police Department and two other agencies are continuing to investigate an accident that happened on Saturday and led to the death of a 3-year-old child.

Sayiyal Leach, of Rowland, died on Sunday at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C., according to Rowland Police Chief John Reaves.

Reaves said his department, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and the state Highway Patrol are working to determine what happened and if anyone will be charged.

According to Reaves, the accident happened about 1:30 p.m. at a car wash on South Bond Street. The child was at the car wash with both her parents, but he did not have their names. Reaves was not at the Rowland Police Department when he provided The Robesonian information, and did not have the report in his hand.

He said a man was driving into the car wash and his vehicle apparently struck the child. The man’s name was not available.

“He said he felt a bump,” Reaves said.

The child initially was taken to a clinic in Dillon, S.C., that is operated by McLeod Regional Medical Center and then was transferred to the larger hospital, where she died of her injuries.

There also was a fatality on Monday morning that was being investigated by the state Highway Patrol, but details were not available.
