ST. PAULS — A St. Pauls man was killed and a teenager severely injured when the motorcycle they were riding was hit head-on Friday evening by a pickup truck that was trying to pass another vehicle on N.C. 20 near St. Pauls.

The driver of the 2006 Toyota pickup truck, Kenneth Martin, 40, of McDonald, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. According to a report by Highway Patrol Trooper J.M. Bullard, Martin, who was driving east at 65 mph in the 55-mph zone, was attempting to pass in a no-passing zone.

Andrew Bethea Canady, 53, of 329 N. Old Stage Road in St. Pauls, was the driver of the westbound 1996 Harley Davidson. He died at the scene of the accident, which was about a mile east of St. Pauls. A 15-year-old passenger on the motorcycle, whose name was not released, was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. No update on her condition was available.

Martin, who was not injured, was wearing a seat belt. Canady and the teenager both were wearing helmets, as required by state law.

The accident happened about 9:10 p.m. on Friday, according to the report.

The motorcycle was destroyed, and damage to the Toyota was estimated at $8,000.
