Election to decide 2 Tribal Council seats

PEMBROKE — Members of the Lumbee Tribe will decide who occupies two Tribal Council seats when they go to the polls Tuesday.

Up for grabs are the District 3 seat held by Al Locklear until he resigned from the council in December 2018 and one District 12 seat. Each district has two representatives, but only one seat in each district is up for election.

The District 3 candidates are Geno Kerns, Harold Smith and Pam Hunt. The District 12 candidates are incumbent Annie Chavis Taylor and challengers Jerry Newman, Randy Henderson and Shelley Strickland.

Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The District 3 polling sites are the Lumberton National Guard Armory located at 4502 Fayetteville Road in Lumberton, the Soaring Eagle Community Building located at 442 Norment Road in Lumberton, and the Barker Ten Mile Community Building located at 4823 Barker Ten Mile Road in Lumberton.

The District 12 polling sites are the Wagram Recreational Center located at 24441 Marlboro St. in Wagram, the Lumbee Heritage Elders Court at 16220 Lumbee Heritage Lane in Laurinburg, and the Evans Crossroads Fire Department located at 3440 Elrod Road in Maxton.

According to information from the Lumbee Tribe Election Board, unofficial results will be posted Tuesday night on Facebook and the tribe’s website. The results will be certified five days later and will be posted on Facebook and the tribe’s website.
