Shooting incident leaves Lumberton man dead

LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man died this evening after being shot along Quail Run Road, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies, and the Sheriff’s Office’s Homicide and Crime Scene divisions responded to a report of someone shot along Quail Run Road, just off Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Lumberton. Upon arrival, deputies found Raekwon Powell, 25, shot and lying beside the roadway.

Life-saving efforts were attempted by onlookers and county EMS personnel, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Powell was pronounced dead a short time later at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

“Homicide detectives are following up leads” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said. “These cowardly acts of violence especially within this particular area have been of great concern to law enforcement. We are utilizing multiple resources to work this case and hope to bring it to a successful conclusion soon.”
