LUMBERTON — Two people were airlifted after a Thursday morning crash on Interstate 95 South that backed up traffic for a little more than an hour.

The crash happened about 10:24 a.m. when a motor home struck the bridge structure at U.S. 301 at the 25 mile marker, said 1st Sgt. S.B. Lewis, of the State Highway Patrol.

The 71-year-old driver, Allen Charlip, and his passenger, 69-year-old Sawzeyah Charlip, both of Port St. Lucie, Florida, were airlifted with serious injuries to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.

Traffic was halted for southbound motorists until about 11:33 a.m. when officials opened one lane of the interstate, Lewis said.

Motorists had been detoured to Exit 31 at N.C. 20 and routed to U.S. 301 South and then back to I-95 South.

Jose Gonzalez was one motorist in the traffic held up by the wreck. He described seeing helicopters overhead and being stopped in traffic with miles of cars lined up ahead.

“This is crazy, and there’s no way to move out of here,” he told The Robesonian about 11:30 a.m., just before a southbound lane was opened.

An unrelated wreck happened about 12:37 p.m. at mile marker 23 on I-95 north, Lewis said. It did not contribute to backup caused by the other wreck. More details about that wreck were not available.
