Accident kills former tribal chairman

PEMBROKE — Jimmy Goins, a former chairman of the Lumbee Tribal Government, was killed today in a single-car accident, according to multiple sources.

Goins, who was 66, was traveling alone on N.C. 71 when the accident occurred. Details were sketchy as The Robesonian was unable to get information from the Highway Patrol, but the newspaper was told the accident happened about 4 p.m.

There had been speculation that Goins would run again this year for tribal chairman, a position he held for six years, two three-year terms. Goins owned an insurance business.

The Robesonian will update the story as details warrant.
